@cassidyclown @RustyCrab @binkle @waifu @zero If we crowdfunded 300,000 USD we could petition ICANN who will probably immediately say no
Btw that fee is non refundable

@RustyCrab It already has. Bots infest mainstream social media. AI scrapers waste heaps of bandwidth training the next big thing that can't figure out that 2+2 is 4. Most of the regular Internet is at the hands of a few gigantic private tech companies. The entire infrastructure is at the whims of private tech companies like Verisign and Donuts.

You don't have to look for the tech dystopia, we're already in one.

I have a blog post about the death of OpenNIC in my drafts from like 2 years ago maybe I should rework it

@cassidyclown @RustyCrab @binkle @waifu @zero Widespread HTTPS made it largely obsolete. The automated infrastructure from like 2013 still works sometimes but it the mailing lists, IRC and blobvomiting d*scord servers all see less activity than a crypto project post -rugpull. There are entire domains like chan, cyb, and o that the registration infrastructure is dead. Some others like oz work until the domain expires but give up after that.
You could theoretically just make your own TLD but unless you convince enough people to add your records to their DNS servers it will remain extremely niche

@waifu PHP was designed by an insane person and everyone who uses it nowadays is either held against their will or is also insane

@binkle @bajax @RustyCrab In my schizophrenic pattern noticing I've seen a lot of things boil down to a nihilistic hatred of what the "other" likes and a want to ruin it, which the left can and has done by institutional power while the right before 2024 largely was contained to the Internet and places like tw*tter
A lot of ideology has gone from "I disagree with you" to "I hate everything you like and want to see it all destroyed" and it's on every side especially all the culture war bullshit

As someone who is tapped into both more conservative/rightist and liberal/leftist spheres it really is a both sides thing but most people are so ingrained in their algorithmic echo chamber their view of the "other" is a cave distortion

@nozaki $300? If it's actually available at that price the price:performance will be insanely good. I really hope they don't fuck it up

I hope Intel makes good CPUs again and AMD and Intel keep making good GPUs, more competition in the hardware space breeds innovation, God forbid anyone new somehow try to compete

@lethn @bajax @matty The 9070 XT is better than the 5070 Ti if and only if you can buy it for cheaper than a 5070 Ti, when they're the same price the 5070 Ti is a little better but there's really not a significant difference. Anything before that was a tradeoff that wasn't really worth it. Intel ARC was irrelevant before the B580 came out a couple months ago their market share of dGPUs was 0%. They might be able to compete with Nvidia in the gaming sphere as they continue to neglect GeForce but until they replace CUDA with something that isn't shit the enterprise won't ever leave Nvidia's monopoly akko_shrug

@lethn @bajax @matty Politicians are corrupt more news at 11
If you wanted to invest a few years ago especially after ChatGPT took off you'd be stupid to not put it into Nvidia because when it comes to high performance FP compute that AI and crypto before it needs their only competition is AMD and AMD's GPUs have been awful forever. Plus it's all CUDA which is proprietary to Nvidia only

@lethn @bajax @matty Nvidia does not give a flying fuck about their gaming GPUs beyond them existing they have a 90% share in the dGPU market with AMD finally getting out of their grave 2 months ago. Almost all (read: like 70%) of their revenue is in hyperscalers and data centres like CoreWeave (which they are heavily invested in) buying their enterprise hardware since you need AI to get ahead according to the people at Cantor Fitzgerald and Morgan Stanley and the only company that sells hardware they need is Nvidia.
I've played the oblivion remake with frame generation on it's obvious when the frame rate UE5s itself but when it's above natural ~70 I personally cannot notice it

@bajax Probably, yes, until the next use of CUDA comes out and the hyperscalers need even more GPU power

@bajax I didn't actually do that because I know I would die but they are still selling the exclusive shovel in a growing bubble of gold they will keep selling anything they make until the bubble pops
