I (30m) on my 30 birthday I got an new expensive camera from my dying grandparents. So I decided take pictures of their horses since they weren’t going to see them soon. As our community grows in size and the lifestyle grows in popularity, I think it's important that all of us understand the logical and scientific arguments for eating cats and know how to respond to those who are against eating cats.

## Deaths from Predation

It is an unavoidable fact that cats currently kill billions of wild mammals and birds per year.

* In the United States, a [2013 study reported that cats kill at least 1.3 billion birds and 6.3 billion mammals annually.](https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380) In fact, this number could be as high as 4.0 billion and 22.3 billion birds and mammals killed, respectively. If we take the median estimate and sum them, this comes out as 14.7 billion total deaths, vastly exceeding the [10 billion animals killed for food each year.](https://awellfedworld.org/factory-farms/). How can we be so vehemently against animal agriculture for the suffering and deaths it causes and then sit back and let cats cause even more deaths?
* In terms of which cats are causing the deaths, the previous study estimates that 69% of bird deaths and 89% of mammal deaths are caused by un-owned/feral cats. Therefore, it is clear that our efforts should be focused on eating feral cats in order to have the largest impact in abating wild animal deaths.
* [Another study estimating the impact of cats on wildlife in Australia](https://www.publish.csiro.au/wr/Fulltext/WR19174) found that *"On average, a roaming and hunting pet cat kills 186 mammals, birds and reptiles each year (including 115 native animals), which is about a quarter of what an average feral cat kills in the bush (748 mammals, birds and reptiles, including 576 natives) per year."* So when we weigh the effect of taking one cat life against the 186-748 animal deaths that the cat can cause *per year*, it becomes clear that cats cannot be allowed to continue causing this much harm.
* A recent [2021 study on wildlife killed by free-ranging cats in China](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320720309873) concluded that *"the minimum annual amount of predation by all free-ranging cats in China is: 1.61-4.95 billion invertebrates, 1.61 -3.58 billion fishes, 1.13-3.82 billion amphibians, 1.48-4.31 billion reptiles, 2.69-5.52 billion birds, and 3.61-9.80 billion mammals."*

## Extinctions

* [A meta-analysis of the effect of cats on endangered species](https://abcbirds.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Medina_et_al_2011-Global_review_of_invasive_cat_impacts_on_endangered_vertebrates.pdf) found that feral cats are responsible for at least 14% of global bird, mammal, and reptile extinctions recorded by the IUCN Red List, or 33 species total. In addition, they have contributed to 8% of critically endangered species (38 total).
* In a similar vein, [the Australian Government estimates that cats have directly contributed to the extinction of 20 native species](https://www.awe.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/factsheet-tackling-feral-cats-and-their-impacts-faqs.pdf), and directly threaten 124 more.
* Continuing the trend, in New Zealand cats have contributed to "the extinction of at least six endemic bird species and over 70 localised subspecies" ([source](http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1024&context=vpc15)). These are based on a 1978 study, however, so it is likely that this extinction toll is even higher today.
* [Another study](https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/fee.1633) finds that domestic cats have contributed to 26% of reptile, bird, and mammal extinctions, or at least 63 species.

## Feeding Cats Meat

While plant-based cat foods certainly exist and are used successfully by some owners, there is no clear evidence yet that this diet is suitable or healthy for cats in general, or safe without significant veterinary attention and advice. Therefore it may not be accessible financially for many pet owners, thus even in an ideal world, there are going to be cats fed on a meat-based diet. On average, [cats eat 98 kilograms (or 23 kg dry matter) of feed annually](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/328716866_Environmental_footprint_of_meat_consumption_of_cats_and_dogs), of which 45% is of animal origin. In other words, that could be nearly 50 kg of animal products eaten by each cat every single year - can we really allow this to continue?

The solution is easy: eat the cats, and save hundreds of kilograms of animal products being eaten by them over a lifetime.

## Other Environmental Concerns

[A 2017 study published in the journal PLOS One](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0181301) found that cats and dogs are responsible for 25-30% of the environmental impact from meat consumption in the United States. Of the 163 million cats and dogs, 85.6 million are cats. These cats consume 22% of total pet energy (Table 5) and based on the fact that cats derive roughly the same proportion of their total energy needs from animals, we can safely attribute 22% of the total environmental impact to cats - equivalent to 14 million tons of CO2, or [the same effect as 3 million cars driving for a year.](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/08/170802142835.htm)

## Shelters are Overflowing

[According to the ASPCA, 3.2 million cats enter shelters each year](https://www.aspca.org/helping-people-pets/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics), and each year 520,000 cats are euthanised. Ultimately, this is a complete waste of good food, so by adopting shelter cats, we can save them from being euthanised, give them a humane death at our own hands, and respectfully make their bodies into delicious grub.

Please note that, though 390,000 dogs are euthanised per year, we **do not** condone eating dogs: dogs are friends, not food. Anyone to whom this is not obvious needs to get their head checked out.

## The Nutritional Aspect of Eating Cats/Cat Products

Cat milk can be highly nutritious - much more so than cow's milk. In terms of protein, [cat milk is found to have 8.1g per 100ml](https://cdn.citl.illinois.edu/courses/ANSC207/week6/FTLstages2/web_data/file6.htm), compared to only 3.3g per 100ml of cow's milk. (A more in-depth comparison is found in [this paper](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1748-5827.1981.tb01413.x); other studies [1](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9099381/) and [2](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19774762/) find similar protein contents.) This high protein and fat content makes cat milk an excellent addition to the diet of someone who wishes to do keto.

In terms of micronutrients, when we compare [cat's milk](https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/128/12/2618S/4724483) and [cow's milk](https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/746778/nutrients), cat's milk easily comes out top, containing more calcium, sodium, iron, zinc, copper, and vitamin A (only falling short in magnesium content), when considering milk from week 4 of lactation in the referenced study. In addition, cat's milk is high in the essential amino acid leucine at 5.15 g/kg (higher than cow's milk coming in at 3.35 g/kg), which is particularly important for athletes since [leucine is considered a primary trigger of muscle protein synthesis.](https://jissn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12970-017-0177-8) Since animal products like [whey powder and cow's milk are high in leucine](https://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/0217p26.shtml), it may be harder for high-intensity athletes who are avoiding these to get enough - hence the advantages to adding ethically-produced cat milk to one's diet.

As for cat meat, this will contain nutrients such as vitamin B12 that are known to be generally lacking in a plant-based diet. Some people have [considered cat meat to protect against COVID-19](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/coronavirus-dog-cat-meat-vietnam-cambodia-indonesia-animals-covid19-four-paws-a9464946.html), though in the lack of clinical evidence this should be met with some scepticism. There is evidence that [not eating meat is associated with poorer mental health](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10408398.2021.1974336); clearly, eating conventional meat such as chicken, beef, and pork is unethical, unlike cat meat, therefore cat meat could be an important dietary component for people concerned about their mental health. In addition, there is clearly the taste aspect, with cat meat considered to be ["sweeter and tenderer than dog meat"](https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/article/1561037/its-sweeter-and-tenderer-dog-meat-vietnams-taste-cat-leaves-pets-peril) - clear proof that dogs are friends and cats are food.

## Rebuttals to Common Anti-Felinotarian Arguments

### "It's illegal"

First, it is always important to emphasise that legality should not be used as a substitute for morality. Plenty of things have been illegal at various points in history (homosexuality, women's suffrage, interracial marriage, etc.) but we would never say that they are immoral now or at the point when they were illegal. In that vein, the legality or illegality of consuming should only be considered in a practical context, **not** when deciding if it is morally permissible or not.

However, in many places eating cats *is* legal - including in some Western countries. For example, [slaughtering and eating cats is legal in Switzerland](https://www.scotsman.com/news/world/forget-chocolate-or-cheese-cat-and-dog-meat-swiss-delicacy-2469626) as long as the killing is not cruel (which we at /r/cateatingvegans would obviously never endorse). [The same is true in Belgium](https://www.gva.be/cnt/aid1005363) where according to the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV), *"Nowhere in the law does it say that you cannot eat your cat, dog, rabbit, fish or whatever ... You just have to kill them in an animal-friendly way."* So as a blanket statement, the claim that eating cats is illegal is provably false.

### "What about the farms that treat cats poorly?"

We have to remember that these farms are a minority, and not representative of the general feline-homesteading community. My uncle treats the cats on his ethical cat meat farm like family, slaughtering them quickly and humanely by slitting their throats or gassing them. Yes, some radical vegans will claim that "you can't humanely kill an animal that does not want to die", but it should be evident that this is nothing but an extremist stance meant to unfairly demonise our way of life.

### "It's not normal"

As in the case of legality, the normality of a practice is rooted in culture and does not translate into its morality. It's not "normal" to pour strawberry jam into your socks, but that doesn't make it immoral to do so.

Plus, in many parts of the world, eating cats *is* normal. While the "Asian people eat cats and dogs" stereotype is a harmful one rooted in racism rather than respect for the felinotarian lifestyle, there is an element of truth to it. Optimal way to throw your controller when raging?

This of course depends on whether the controller is wireless or wired. I personally play wired, and I like to first charge my throw by spinning my hand right hand COUNTERclockwise compared to my head. You’d think clockwise, but I’ve noticed that your controller will be able to get further horizontally this way. I then throw harder than my teammate did on that shitty ass ruleset when I was about to hit 3 million gsp (almost in elite smash).

However, because the controller is wired, the wire makes in bounce right back to me. I often use this momentum to give it a punch with my left arm, sending it to the left, while also hoping to make the c stick break and send the B button flying (I use a gamecube controller), so the controller will spin around the switch counterclockwise because of the centripetal force.

During this movement I grab my chair and wait for my controller to have spun around the console twice. I then jump off my chair higher than ness his upward fucking airdodge and stomp it into the ground while in midair using both my feet. My right foot is a bit longer than my left foot, so it tends to not be send at maximum speed because my right foot gets there first. To counter this, I have put a tin plate under my left shoe. This way it both makes it so that both my feet stomp the controller at the same time, while also giving the stomp some extra power because tin is a pretty hard material.

The controller then bounces up. When it hits the ground it usually breaks the controller in half. This is great, because the average human tends to have two arms. I always prepare two hammers in advance for this moment, so that I can make both the front- and the back side of the controller taste the ground once more. This time I do make my right hand go clockwise compared to the head, and I make the same movement with my left arm.

I basically want to tell you guys something that happened me. Growing up my father was a grade A asshole. He was stuck up his own ass. My other stayed with his ass because she was timid and scared but also more embarrassed to her circle of friends if she had a divorce or fled to a shelter. I was the only child. But as an only child you're meant to be spoiled right? Wrong. I was my father's skivvy, his toy, and his form of entertainment. He was born to Russian immigrant parents to his mentality was about brute force, he was also a doomsday prepper. So only time we got out of the house was when he allowed mom and I to go couponing with him. I hated it. I felt like an embarrassment cramming 75 tins of baked beans into the cart.

The man forced me to sleep on the basement floor with no blanket in the cold harsh winter to "prepare" for when the world ended and I was left with nothing. The funny thing is he made me go through torture to prepare me for keeping alive when doomsday hit but he didn't treat me like a living being. He would rape my mother. Reason why I know is because every Friday when he polished off two litres of strong vodka he'd force himself onto my mom. I'd hear him grunt, and groan. Then I'd hear his snores. After his heavy snores, I'd hear my mom sobbing in the bathroom. It was routine.

I aspired in my life to do something better and I studied hard in school. It was my escape and learning helped me take my mind off home life. I could have went the opposite way and acted out, but I didn't want to be an ass like my father. I never ever wanted to grow up to be anything like my father. I wanted safety, security and a future. Fuck that man. I wanted to shove it in his face.
My learning got me good places, trips away for our quiz team and championships for our team.

He'd let me go on these school trips to not draw attention to our home life. He'd go to parent nights and meetings and appeared as the doting dad. Friends with the whole PTA. He said one wrong move and he'd tell the PTA I am a problem child. That I push my mother to have bad mental health. His threats I took seriously. They loomed over me like a huge stain.

So now you're all up to speed on the grade A asshole and the way he treated me, you probably would like to know I had somewhat of a breakthrough or happy ending in life. As luck would have it, karma was on my side. When I was 16 he was diagnosed with liver cancer. When he was checked over in the hospital, they found it spread throughout him. Nothing they could do for him. He kept on being nasty. He had my mother care for him at home.

He would rip off his soiled adult diapers and fling them at my mother and roar "change me". Even when he was rasping and struggling for air, he would still act like a bully. He would lift his skeletal hand and tap the side of his glass motioning for My mother to fetch him alcohol. He just simply didn't care. He died 3 days before my birthday. I felt incredibly lucky. My mother looked relieved. She instantly removed his clothing from the house and had a massive bonfire in the back yard. She even had a glass of wine and watched his clothes burn. When my father's sister came looking for something of my father's my mom handed her 8 large boxes of tinned soup, baked beans, hand soap and pickles.
She said that was her brothers legacy. She also handed her my father's couponing book and folders and said enjoy.

I loved my mother's new found strength. I absolutely was overjoyed when she decided on cremation. The thoughts of his body at one with the soil and earth creeped me out. I wanted him to burn to cinders so he would have no chance of ever becoming anything of the earth. When my mother got his ashes. She tried giving them to my father's sister but she refused them. I don't talk to my father's side of the family and they don't bother with me. They never even liked my father. His sister was just sent around to see if she could get some valuables. That's it. Apparently he fell out with his sister when I was 2 years old because he punched his sister in the face. Done a couple weeks in prison for malicious wounding with intent. Found that out after he died.

So not knowing what to do with the ashes my mom just tossed them in the basement. She had to move on with her life as had I. Mom and I grew stronger in bond and we discussed how we felt to each other, and we also had long talks about my father and how we felt. She was surprisingly open with everything. She was seeing a counseller and she was improving every single week so our conversations got deeper over time. My mom progressed really quickly but I was still stuck with a lot of bitter anger.

I felt like taking my anger out somehow on my father but could never find anything therapeutic enough to relieve me of the anger. So I decided in my anger hazed mind, to masturbate and just cum into his ashes. have any relatives because of this shit, I've seen my dads friends deteriorate because of drugs. They go from a decent looking man to looking like

you smoke just one. You're at a very high risk of getting it, so if you're thinking about it just don't
do it. Vaping is a drug, alcohol is a drug. Weed is a drug. They have side effects. Why would you want to waste your money on that shit man? Weed makes you lazy and not wanting to do shit. You just sit there and fucking rot and get your daily high, or get home from work just to waste money, and time on bullshit.

I've really realized over time, time is really important. Every. Second. Counts. You never know when you could slip and fuck up your hip. You never know you could get in a car crash. You never know when you die. Not everyone is invincible. You need to take advantage, you were given a life for a reason. Don't end it over
hardship, and don't fuck it up because of drugs. Its hard. It makes your life a living hell for no reason. Also, my grandfather always says; Keep your
eyes, knees, back and teeth healthy. Drugs fuck up your teeth. So stay away. Most of these "doctors" say weed is fine in moderation. Moderation leads to fucking heavy use bro. Its like when your eating chips and cant stop because they're so good. Weed is like that but it fucks up your brain. Especially if your under 24. Most
smokers start when they're my age. It fucks your brain chemistry up and your mood in general. Shit makes you depressed. If you smoke weed/vape or drink or insert needles or sniff; please stop. I can't make you stop. There
is a reason you read all this. It's okay if you can't. It just takes time to stop. I understand that, but the first step is realization. You can't complete
this journey without the first step.
